The story behind Bazaar of Boxes:
… at least, the concept of Bazaar of Boxes as a company that creates and sells custom boxes, that is. Late 2020, Marvin and Michel de Jong had the brilliant scheme of trying to expand the BoB brand, to bring the boxes to a wider audience. They’d be doing that by streaming Magic the Gathering, the format Legacy specifically, on Twitch! Teus van der Meij, a close friend of Marvin and Michel, joined the endeavor.
Ironically, since the conception of Marvin’s devious scheme of trying to expand his box-empire by streaming online, the boxes themselves had slowly been put on the back burner and what was once mostly just a means to an end; one of selling more boxes – had now eclipsed the product and had become the new product (for now)!
The Bazaar of Boxes Series:
Early 2021, Michel felt there had been a huge hole in the Dutch MTG Legacy landscape for quite some time; paper tournaments had basically died out, there was very little community gathering going on and when folks said that Legacy was a dying format – we almost started to believe them. However, that didn’t deter us from doing something about it. Michel took it upon himself to set up new community hubs for the Dutch Legacy scene and during the pandemic, we had been secretly working behind the scenes on setting up our own paper Legacy tournaments, now known as the Bazaar of Boxes Series.
In the summer of 2021 we had our first edition in café Theseus and would be sold out with around 50 players from then on – which made the BoB Series the largest Legacy tournament in the Netherlands at the time. However, the demand for the BoB Series was outgrowing the capacity café Theseus allowed, so early 2023 we moved to a larger venue, In de Boomtak, which raised our player cap to 80 players.
During the inception of the Series concept, the BoB crew was reinforced with Ruben Scholten (production/crew) and our judge crew was seriously bolstered.
As of late 2022, Bazaar of Boxes has been part of the European Legacy Masters project and is Netherlands’ largest ELM qualifier and Michel and Marvin both became representatives for the Netherlands in the ELM committee.
In the summer of 2024 however, some things changed:
We had outgrown our venue at In De Boomtak and moved to our current venue, the Koning Willem II Stadium – a frickin’ soccer stadium! – raising our capacity to 128 players, with the possibility for future expansion and now making the Bazaar of Boxes Series a Premier European Legacy Masters qualifier. Michel and Marvin ended up parting ways during that time with Teus and Ruben due to differences and have been the sole two core members of BoB since then. Late 2024 we joined the CardCon roster, bringing our BoB Series event to a huge boardgame/cardgame convention, once a year. In 2025 we expanded our CardCon edition to an entire weekend, adding a Team Trios Triple Legacy event.
All throughout this entire adventure, we’ve been providing (and continuously improving) Legacy coverage on our Twitch and YouTube channels for our BoB Series events, our weekly BoB Trials paper streams and Marvin’s MTGO endeavors. In the summer of 2025 we were hired as the coverage and production team for Eternal Mania and the European Legacy Masters Finals and will be doing the same for 2026’s edition!
Luckily and thankfully, through the years, we’ve been able to pick up quite a few sponsors (and are always welcoming more); Goat Enterprise, Ultimate Guard, MTGO and RageSquid are our current sponsors and thanks to them we’re able to reach and sustain our goals!
As time moves forward, we keep expanding – and well, what about those boxes you ask?
There is no box (but, we’re very close!)
